I am often asked
what brand of kibble we feed our Mastiffs, my answer is none. Dogs
are carnivores and should be fed as such. Neither their teeth, nor
their digestive systems were designed to eat crunchy nuggets of corn
and/or grain, nor questionable meat items as received by the
rendering plants.
They evolved to
eat fresh raw, uncooked meats and bones. Kibbles were created in the
1950s as a way to make money off of garbage, and NOT to provide your
pet with a convenient and healthy diet as consumers are led to
believe.
While some kibbles
are better then others, there is not one kibble on the market that
is truly appropriate for a carnivore.
If you are feeding
what most of us refer to as "Death Nuggets" please do some research
for the sake of your pets.
All of that said,
some people may still be confused as to what our Mastiffs really
eat. Some examples are ...
-
Raw Chicken, with
and without bone. This includes whole
dressed chickens, chicken necks, chicken wings, leg quarters, thighs, meaty whole carcasses, ribs,
backs, breasts, hearts, livers and gizzards.
-
Raw Turkey, with
and without bone. This includes whole
dressed turkeys, turkey necks, drumsticks, meaty whole carcasses, breasts,
hearts, livers and gizzards.
-
Raw Duck, with and
without bone. This includes whole
dressed ducks, duck necks, meaty whole carcasses, and livers.
-
Raw Quail, with
bones. These are tasty little birds, and include all innards.
-
Raw Lamb, with and
without bone. Nice meaty
lamb necks, Lamb Riblets, Ground Lamb Breast and occasionally Lamb
Femur bones as a treat.
-
Raw Beef with and
without bone. This includes lean cuts of beef, heart, tongue, liver,
ribs, necks and Green Tripe (the unbleached stomach).
-
Buffalo, Pork and
Veal Hearts, as well as other traditional meats from these animals.
-
Fish: whole
mackerel and ground salmon, other species as available locally such
as Cod, Haddock, Sea Bass, Skates
These are just
some examples of what we feed. We feed a large variety of meats and
bones from different species. The above food items are either fit
for human consumption, or the remaining parts of animals raised for
human consumption, once meat processors have removed the items they
want for the human meat markets. Notice above there is NO GRAIN or
CORN added. 99% of the kibble companies "recipes" contain up to 80%
grain, corn and or beet pulp. Again, dogs are carnivores!
